33rd Assault On Mt. Mitchell, Part Two

Here is the second part of my video diary of my first Assault On Mount Mitchell. This is definitely the one that gives a better idea of the magnitude of the event. Even so the video doesn't truly capture the full scope of it.

One thing I have noticed recording video with my helmet cam: it is hard to show the perspective of a grade. When you are recording straight ahead -- even on a 8% grade -- the road looks flat. Believe me... there were plenty of grades!

I am impressed with your video taking abilities...these are a nice addition to the blog. I rode the Marion race this year... I hope to join you at the top in 2009!

Nice report. I was a first time AOMM rider in '09. I'm 62 so I approached the event with the idea of scouting the course and completing it in some reasonable time, saving my PR for next time. I train in NE Ohio which is pretty flat but did get a few long days of 'spring training' in on a couple trips to CA in April and May so I was probably better prepared than most flat-state visitors. The heat was an extra little surprise from the mountain gods but I'm glad you didn't dwell on it as I'm sure that every year the weather has its own contribution to the ride's challenge. Whose to say if riding in cold rain or even snow at the top wouldn't be worse. Maybe we'll find out on May 18, 2009, eh?
